Betelnut Chewing/

Betelnut Chewing

So…I have talked about the popular Palauan culture of chewing betelnut to about a hundred students or more since I first became an ALT. Every time I talk about it, I see students making confused and unpleasant faces. All of which I expect! I laugh and giggle at this—the surprised and grossed out reactions—because I completely understand! Even some Palauans don’t understand this cultural habit and don’t like to chew.

Besides the unpleasantness of reddened teeth and spitting out red saliva, chewing betelnut still holds important cultural values and beliefs in Palau. These are just some of them that I have come to learn and experience.

Conversation Starter

Asking for betelnut or talking about where to find the greenest, juiciest, and good-sized—not too big, not too small—betelnut is a good way to start a conversation between strangers or among colleagues, friends, or family members who have nothing else to talk about. This leads to the latest gossip around town, an event coming up, politics, or the strangers are related by marriage or know a cousin of a cousin of each other’s cousin.

Plenty Betelnuts and Betelnut Basket Reflect on You

A full basket of betelnut reflects well on persons. It can mean they are well taken care of by their spouses or family. For example, if a woman’s betelnut bag is full of good-sized, green, and juicy betelnut, people can assume that her husband takes care of her by making sure she has enough betelnut to chew so that she doesn’t have to ask for betelnut from other people. We can say the same for a man. If a man’s betelnut basket is full of betelnut, it means his wife is careful to make sure he has plenty of betelnut when he leaves the house to work, important gatherings, or be with friends.

Also, your betelnut basket and plenty supply of juicy and green betelnuts will make you look very interesting to others. Your family will make sure you have plenty of betelnuts in your bag and that your betelnut basket looks nice, decorated, pretty, and equipped with everything to prepare your betelnut. Another important thing: CLEAN your betelnut basket! If it is messy and dirty, people will assume that that is how you are. So, keep it clean and looking nice. Your betelnut bag can be an important accessory.

When It Is Dry Season, You Do NOT Ask for Betelnut!

During dry season, betelnut becomes scarce because the trees produce less nuts and the nuts are dry and bitter. So, during this time, it is extremely rude to ask for betelnut. Be aware that there is a scarcity of betelnut, and leave your home with enough supply of betelnuts. If you run out, try and hold your tongue from asking others for betelnut until you get home or have the time to go find betelnut at the markets.

Try your best not to ask, but if you cannot hold your betelnut craving anymore, you can ask. However, you can only accept one or two or whatever someone offers. If someone offers you an appealing betelnut, take it or POLITELY decline, but DO NOT BE PICKY! They may never offer you betelnut in the future! Worst situation: they will spread a rumor that you are snobby! That can happen!

Love Spell

My grandmother taught me to never accept betelnut from just anyone. The betelnut might be cursed with a magic spell! In the olden Palauan time, betelnut can carry olai, magic spells or curses. These were often bad spells. One particular spell is the Love Spell. This can be a curse even though you will fall in love with someone—someone you don’t even know or love in your normal state. If you accept and chew an affected betelnut, you will fall in love and be bound to the man or woman whom the love spell cursed you to be beholden to forever.

Today, the Palauan people still strongly believe in this Love Spell with betelnuts. My grandmother told me to throw away suspicious betelnuts or discreetly pass the betelnuts under my legs before I chew them. This act will disarm the spell. Unless you want to fall in love this way, you can chew ANY betelnut offered to you. But you have been warned!

So, these are some cultural beliefs and values about chewing betelnut in Palau. Chewing betelnut has been practiced for hundreds of years in Palau and many other Pacific and Asian countries. It is a beautiful culture yet a bad habit. Thank you! The end.
